Lavash Baking and Geghard Monastery
Lavash is a traditional thin bread that is an essential part of Armenian cuisine. It is typically prepared by a small group of women and requires significant effort, coordination, experience, and specialized skills. Lavash is usually served rolled up with local cheese, herbs, or meats, and can be stored for up to six months. In 2014 (9.COM), it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Northeast of Garni, further up the Azat River Gorge, lies a magnificent monument of medieval Armenian architecture — the Geghard Monastery (founded in the 4th century). Geghard contains numerous churches and tombs, most of which are carved into the rock, showcasing the pinnacle of medieval Armenian architectural achievement. The complex is set in a dramatic natural landscape, surrounded by towering cliffs at the entrance to the Azat Valley. In 2000, the monastery was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
