January 6 - Nativity of Christ
Until the 5th century, all Christian churches celebrated the feast of the Nativity and Epiphany on January 6. Later, some churches began to celebrate Holy Christmas on December 25, so that people would forget the pagan holiday celebrated on this day. The Armenian Church has remained faithful to the old order and celebrates the birthday of Christ on January 6. On this day, the Armenian Church also celebrates the day of the Baptism of Christ.
February 11 - Day of the patron saint of lovers of St. Sarkis The holiday of the patron saint of young lovers, Saint Sarkis, has been officially celebrated in Armenia since 2007. On the night before the holiday, young people eat a salty pancake and expect a revelation in a dream: which bride or groom will be intended for them.
February 13 - Terendez The origins of this holiday are in the ancient ritual of the pagan fire-worshipers. It is similar to the Russian Maslenitsa, its main participants are lovers and newlyweds. The symbol of the action is a bonfire over which young couples jump. The main thing is not to untie your hands, then the union will be strong.
February 19 - Book Donation Day The date was not chosen by chance - it was on this day in 1869 that the famous Armenian writer and storyteller Hovhannes Tumanyan was born.
April 4 - 11 - Tumanyan days For several years now, Yerevan has been celebrating the days of the great poet Hovhannes Tumanyan. “It is impossible not to love Tumanyan. He lives in the heart of every Armenian. Tumanyan is a collective image of the Armenian people, their conscience and soul. Tumanyan must be remembered always, every day, and not from anniversary to anniversary, since he is the most Armenian writer ”.
April 7 - Day of motherhood, beauty and love Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos. According to the biblical scriptures, on April 7, guardian angels inform the Mother of God that she will have a child in 9 months. Hence this day is the Blagovest.
Surb Zatik - Holy Easter in Armenia - April 4 The Armenian word "Zatik" (Easter) probably comes from the word "azatutyun, azatvel" (freedom, to be liberated) and means deliverance from suffering, evil and death. Greeting each other on Easter, Russian Christians say: "Christ is risen!" - "Truly resurrected!" The idea of resurrection is fundamental in Christianity. Its meaning is in the transition from death to a new life, from earth to heaven. On Easter Day, the early church celebrated the crucifixion of Christ.
April 24 - Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide On this day, hundreds of thousands of people climb the hill to the memorial complex and lay flowers at the eternal flame.
May 18 - International Museum Day These days, the National Gallery of Armenia, like other museums, is open to everyone.
Vardavar (Transfiguration)
Among the Armenian traditional holidays, Vardavar is undoubtedly the largest summer holiday, one of the main holidays of the Armenian Church and one of the most beloved among the people. It is celebrated on the 98th day after Easter. According to the customs of the holiday, it is customary to pour water over everyone. The majority of the population of Armenia participates in the holiday.
August 15 - Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos The Dormition of the Theotokos is one of the most important holidays of the Armenian Church. This day, dedicated to the departure of the Virgin Mary, has been celebrated since the 5th century. After the liturgy on the day of the Assumption of the Virgin, the ceremony of blessing the grapes is performed in Armenian churches, which is by no means combined with the holiday.
