Saghmosavank – Amberd Fortress – Alphabet Alley
Armenia is rich in historical and architectural landmarks. Amberd Fortress, located in a picturesque gorge and seemingly soaring into the clouds, will impress anyone. Standing proudly on an unassailable promontory of Mount Aragats at an altitude of 2,300 meters, Amberd, built between the 7th and 11th centuries, amazes all with its grandeur.
Next, we head north to the Saghmosavank Monastery (translated as “Monastery of Psalms”), which, according to legend, was founded by Saint Gregory the Illuminator 17 centuries ago above the scenic Kasagh River Gorge. From the very edge of the gorge, one can admire a breathtaking and slightly intimidating view.
We then continue to the Alphabet Alley, a monument created in 2005 in honor of the 1600th anniversary of the Armenian alphabet. On the slope of Mount Aragats, you will find 39 letters of the Armenian alphabet, carved out of tuff stone, accompanied by a statue of their creator, Mesrop Mashtots.
