Haghpat – Akhtala – Sanahin
The Monastery Complex of Haghpat, located northeast of Sanahin, dates back to the 10th century. It was founded during the reign of King Ashot III of the Bagratid dynasty. In the late 18th century, the famous Armenian ashugh Sayat-Nova lived at this monastery. Not far from Haghpat lies another marvel of the Lori region — the Sanahin Monastery.
The Akhtala Monastic Complex, set amid picturesque surroundings, was founded in the 10th century. The architecture of the monastery is quite distinctive and noticeably different from other similar constructions. This is due to the unique combination of Armenian and Georgian architectural styles employed by the builders. Akhtala served not only as a religious site but also as a military stronghold. The preserved defensive fortress and numerous hidden underground tunnels are a testament to this. In addition, you can see a two-story monks' dwelling and a vast number of delicately carved khachkars (cross-stones). The interior walls are adorned with beautiful frescoes that have been remarkably well preserved to this day.
Another fascinating site is the Zarni-Parni cave-fortress complex, where, according to some historical accounts, the renowned scholar and philosopher Hovhannes Imastaser once lived and carried out his work. Today, the site has been transformed into a historical museum that showcases a collection of rare ancient agricultural tools and household items.
