Yerevan City Tour

The Yerevan city tour includes visits to the city's most iconic landmarks: Victory Park, the Cascade Complex, Northern Avenue, Republic Square, Opera and Ballet Square, the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex – Tsitsernakaberd, the Matenadaran (Institute of Ancient Manuscripts), Vernissage, and the GUM market, known for its wide selection of dried fruits, nuts, and sweets.

Let’s begin our acquaintance with Armenia from its 12th and current capital! We invite you to take part in a classic tour of Yerevan — the capital and largest city of Armenia, as well as one of the oldest cities in the world. The name “Yerevan” originates from the Urartian fortress of Erebuni, from which the city began its history. Yerevan is over 2,800 years old and became the 12th capital in Armenian history in 1918. The city lies at an altitude of 900 to 1,300 meters above sea level.

Modern-day Yerevan was shaped by the master plan of architect Alexander Tamanyan in 1924. Designed with a unified vision inspired by national ecclesiastical architecture, the city was built almost entirely according to this plan. As a result, very few buildings from the pre-Tamanyan era have survived, and the city lacks a historic center in the traditional sense. In the city built according to Tamanyan’s plan, there is now a central area where most of the city’s main cultural landmarks are located.

Victory Park, or “Haghtanak Park” in Armenian, dedicated to the USSR's victory in World War II, is one of the favorite places for Yerevan residents to take a walk. This is where the iconic “Mother Armenia” monument stands — a symbol of Armenia’s eternal readiness to defend its people. “Mother Armenia” is a statue of a woman holding a sword with a shield at her feet, representing the image of the Motherland. The total height of the monument is 43.5 meters. The pedestal of the statue houses a museum dedicated to the victory in World War II. In front of the statue, an eternal flame burns on a granite platform in memory of the victims of the Second World War. Around the statue are displays of military equipment. Inside the monument is the Military Museum of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia. Nearby lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a symbol of gratitude to those who fell in the fight against fascism. Victory Park features the 22-meter-tall bronze “Mother Armenia” statue, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the Eternal Flame, the Heroes’ Alley, Lake “Arevik,” and numerous attractions and rides.

The sightseeing tour of Yerevan continues to the Cascade:

The Cascade Complex is located in the very heart of Yerevan and is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Armenian capital. At the forefront stands the statue of Alexander Tamanyan, the greatest Armenian architect and the mastermind behind the master plan of modern Yerevan.

The space behind the statue and the Cascade itself serve today as a kind of “open-air gallery”, where visitors can admire numerous fascinating statues, installations, and works by contemporary artists and sculptors — among them Lynn Chadwick and Fernando Botero.

The Cascade Complex, built in 1970, connects the city center with Victory Park, where the well-known “Mother Armenia” statue stands. At the top of the Cascade, there's an observation deck offering a breathtaking view over central Yerevan.

Within the Cascade is the Gafesjian Center for the Arts, where contemporary artworks are on display. The complex also frequently hosts film screenings, concerts, and other cultural events.

The Yerevan city tour continues along Northern Avenue: The idea of creating Northern Avenue was originally proposed by Alexander Tamanyan back in 1924, during the development of the master plan for the Armenian capital. However, the original design — which envisioned the avenue leading directly to Republic Square — was later abandoned. For many decades, the area was occupied by small private houses. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that a new plan was developed for the construction of Northern Avenue, taking into account all the changes that had occurred over time. The private houses and land plots were then purchased from their owners to make way for development. Today, Northern Avenue is one of the favorite pedestrian zones for Yerevan residents. The street is fully pedestrianized, with no vehicular traffic. It begins at Tumanyan Street and stretches down to the lower part of Abovyan Street, near Republic Square.

The sightseeing tour continues to Republic Square in Yerevan: Republic Square is truly the “heart” of modern Yerevan. This was exactly the vision of the city's master plan, developed between 1924 and 1936 by architect Alexander Tamanyan, which gave the city its distinctive and unique look.

It’s hard to believe that just over a hundred years ago, this place was a city square, more resembling a large wasteland. Today, Republic Square is one of the finest ensembles of modern Armenian architecture.
