Etchmiadzin – Zvartnots – Yerevan
Overview tour to Yerevan, and to the religious center of the country, Etchmiadzin.
The Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the main religious center of Armenia. The spiritual center of all Armenians includes the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, as well as the churches of Saint Hripsime and Saint Gayane.
The Etchmiadzin Cathedral is considered one of the oldest monuments of Christianity.
It was built in the early 4th century, shortly after Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion.
According to legend, Saint Gregory the Illuminator had a vision in which, the Only-Begotten, Christ descended from heaven with a fiery hammer and indicated the place where the cathedral should be built. On this site, in 303 AD, where an ancient pagan temple once stood, a church was founded and named Etchmiadzin, which in Armenian means "the place of the descent of the Only-Begotten." Etchmiadzin is the residence of the Armenian Patriarch, the Catholicos of all Armenians.
The treasury museum at the spiritual center of Etchmiadzin is a unique repository and exhibition of valuable Christian relics and various ritual items of the Armenian Church. The museum building was constructed in the 1980s with the financial support of the renowned Armenian businessman, philanthropist, and benefactor Alec Manukyan and his wife, Marie Manukyan. Alec and Marie Manukyan are buried right across from the museum building. The museum has been open to visitors since October 1982.
At the beginning of the 20th century, just 10 kilometers from Yerevan, a group of researchers discovered the ruins of an ancient temple buried up to its roof under layers of earth and sand. After excavating the structure and reconstructing its original appearance, scholars concluded that this hill was once home to one of the most magnificent and grand religious monuments of early medieval Armenia — the Zvartnots Temple, also known as the "Temple of the Vigilant Angels."
The tour of Yerevan and Echmiadzin concludes with an evening tour of Yerevan. The city sightseeing program includes visits to Yerevan’s main landmarks: the 2800th Anniversary Park, the Cascade, Northern Avenue, Republic Square, Opera and Ballet Square, and Victory Park
