Once you leave the city, be sure to visit several landmarks:
1. Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat), known as the “holy city created by God,” is the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Here you'll find the majestic Etchmiadzin Cathedral, dating back to the early 4th century, as well as the official residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Don't miss the churches of Saint Hripsime (618), Saint Gayane (630), and Shoghakat (1694), each built in memory of martyred nuns who refused to renounce their faith.
2. Khor Virap Monastery, meaning “Deep Dungeon,” is the site where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was held captive for 14 years.
3. Lake Sevan – Dilijan: As you travel across Armenia, make sure to walk the shores of Lake Sevan, located 8 km from Gavar at an altitude of 1,900 meters. Upon reaching the lake, explore the ancient architecture of monasteries such as Sevanavank, Ayrivank, Vanevan, and Kotavank. As you stroll through the Sevan surroundings, you’ll undoubtedly feel the spirit of various eras and people. The serene surface of the water and the surrounding landscape will stay in your memory forever. Dilijan is a town in northern Armenia, known for its spa resorts and traditional crafts. The town is surrounded by forests of a national park. The Geological Museum and Art Gallery showcase archaeological finds and works of world art. To the north lies the Haghartsin Monastery complex with stone churches, and to the east – the Goshavank Monastery, known for its stone steles with carved crosses (khachkars).
5. Tatev Monastery, originally established in the 4th century and constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries, stands as one of the iconic attractions of southern Armenia. It can be reached by riding the “Wings of Tatev” , the world’s longest reversible cable car.
