Khor Virap

Khor Virap is one of the shrines of the Armenian Apostolic Church, a place of pilgrimage. According to legend, it is here that the deep pit is located, into which, at the behest of Trdat III, Gregory the Illuminator was thrown for preaching Christianity. Only after many years of imprisonment, when Gregory the Illuminator miraculously heals Trdat III from a serious illness, the king proclaims Christianity the state religion. According to the annals of the famous Armenian historian Agatangegos, Grigor Lusavorich, the founder of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia (301), suffered his torment here. The Khor Virap monastery housed a theological seminary. From the territory of the monastery, due to the special proximity, an unusual view of the biblical Mount Ararat opens. Khor Virap is the closest place to Mount Ararat, from where you will have the opportunity to see the legendary mountain.
